starfighters of the rebellion and new republic

They're fast, agile, rugged and heavily armed. They have captured the minds of Star Wars fans for almost a generation, and are the subject of one of LucasArt's most popular game series of all time. They are the starfighters of the Rebellion, and like much of the technology of Star Wars are surrounded with contradictions from many sources.

This page is an effort to make sense of these, and find a workable common ground between the canon, the novels, and the games. Visual evidence from the films themselves and references in the film novelizations and radio drama, the canon, take precedence, however at times even these sources may disagree or are silent. In these cases it falls upon the official literature of the Expanded Universe and roleplaying games to fill in the blanks or find a way for disagreements in the canon to work. Ultimately, this is an attempt at finding a way for all these sources to work together, or if necessary draw new conclusions, and hopefully devise a single cohesive understanding of one of the many romantic elements in George Lucas' universe: the epic dogfight.

Introduction: A summary on the advantages of starfighters over warships, common features of the Rebellion's fighters, and other technicalities surrounding these weapons of war.

The X-wing: Sleek, versatile, and agile, the X-wing is the superb fighter of the Rebel Alliance. From the dawn of rebellion to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, the X-wing has been the mainstay dogfighter of the Rebel fleet, beloved by the best starfighter pilots in the galaxy, and trademark mount of the legendary Rogue Squadron.

The Y-wing: The true workhorse of the Rebellion. Aging but reliable, the Y-wing hails from the Clone Wars but has served faithfully over its many years of action. This rugged and versatile heavy fighter has been tested and proven many times, and though old retains its place in the arsenal of the New Republic.

The A-wing: Diminutive, fast and highly maneuverable, the A-wing is the Rebellion's premier interceptor. The fastest and most agile fighter at the time of the Battle of Endor, she remains a formidable combatant, despite her light armament and minimal durability.

The B-wing: Large, awkward, but armed to the teeth, the B-wing was the Rebellion's heaviest fighter at Endor. Packing more weaponry than some starships the B-wing was a born gunship.

The Headhunter: A relic of the Old Republic, this aging fighter and predecessor of the legendary X-wing long maintained her place in the Rebellion's arsenal by benefit of her widespread production and ease of availability. Perhaps the most successful starfighter design in galactic history.

The E-wing: Originally a successor to the X-wing, but now a superb compliment. Faster than and as agile as the TIE Interceptor, but more rugged and heavily armed than the X-wing, she is a lethal dogfighter.

The K-wing: A perhaps failed experiment, this dedicated bomber apparently vanished from the New Republic shortly after her combat debut against the Yevetha. Armed with an array of anti-surface, anti-installation and anti-shipping weaponry she is nonetheless a formidable attack ship.

The V-wing: Premier dedicated atmospheric fighter of the New Republic. Though not a starfighter, she fills the gap of air supremacy. Fast and agile, but lightly armed and fragile she is nonetheless an effective fighter-killer.

The T-47: Built from a civilian speeder, this armored utility craft was the Rebellion's only line of defense at the Battle of Hoth. A nearly infinitely adaptable repulsor craft.
